I finally found the problem. Any time that the system probes the monitor features, it crashes with the 0x3b BSOD. The same monitor works fine with Vista and previous versions of Windows. Replacing the Nokia with an even older monitor that was sitting in the closet eliminated all of the problems both with installs and subsequent activities.

Way too much work for a problem so trivial. I also have two physical drives, one with multiple partitions. I’ve tried upgrading from Vista as well as fresh install from DVD onto the same partition and a new partition.

Attempting to install the Windows 7 32 bit version resulted in a 0x7f error with no program specified in about the same location. Vista 32 bit Business installed with no problems on this machine, alone with all of the upgrades and SP 1. Unfortunately, the upgrade to Windows 7 also failed during the Completing Upgrade phase with the 0x7f error again.

It rolled back to Vista after the failure. In the last case, I did notice that the install downloaded some changes before it started. OK, I’m finally runing Windows 7 but it was kind of messy. It appears that the system was crashing when it tried to change the video resolution. It finished that phase of the installation and rebooted again, only to crash again with the same 0x3b error in dxgkrnl.

What finally allowed me to complete the installation was reinstalling the GeForce videocard and rebooting. It looks like the unknown videocard forces Windows into VGA mode, where it happily completed the rest of the installation.

After the installation, the system did attempt to fix the video driver, but it failed again on the reboot. The system still isn’t going to be completely happy until I find the right video drivers, but at least I have a way to get past that dreaded BSOD.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thursday, January 22, PM. Friday, January 30, PM. I’m thinking it might have something to do with hard drive layout. Friday, January 23, AM. Friday, January 23, PM. Still not having much luck installing Windows 7, so I thought I’d add some follow up.

If anyone has any other suggestions, I’m willing to give it a try. Tuesday, January 27, AM. Friday, January 30, AM. Guess what monitor I have? A Nokia Xi. That’s right. I’ll try the install again with one of my Samtron 75Es and report back. The Samtron did the trick. Not only that, but it made me realize just how out of focus my Nokia really is.

I’m seriously considering an upgrade now For what it’s worth, I can’t get W7 to accept the monitor. Manually setting a driver for the monitor does not work as it probes the monitor and triggers the crash anyway. I hope this gets fixed or a workaround found soon — using a side monitor for testing is awkward. Saturday, January 31, PM. Been getting this too but not same monitor.

Driving me crazy but I do have another monitor and wish my LCD was working also as may not have had this problem because already installed oncew with the LCD and no problems but it this one is a whole different setup.

Thanks for the suggestions though. Wednesday, March 4, AM.
