It appears to be a memory issue as when I restart Windows I get a error but it flashes to quickly to make out in detail. This just came up with build If you do a capture it doesn’t then open the editor.

You also can’t just open the editor. This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread. I have the same question Report abuse.

Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. In reply to A. User’s post on September 2, I’m experiencing the same issue. Your workaround did not resolve the issue for me. It feels like a more tested and rounded product to use. The support from SnagIT team has been outstanding at the time of installation and later on when I had doubts.

I hope they bring in the image size compression functionality soon. There are a few cons I face from time to time – Virtually no editing option for video captures – Cannot edit or crop an imported GIF – No image size compression option.

I was satisfied with the product in the trial days. It seemed to tick all my requirement boxes. Industry: Computer Software. It has been a trainwreck of an experience, but given that it has many of the resources that I need to perform my job that other capturing software does not I’m stuck with it. SnagIt, when it works, is an extremely useful tool for creating videos on the fly or taking quick screenshots that you need to annotate. It is also feature-rich as compared to other screen capture software which makes it hard to switch to a competitor.

Having used SnagIt for close to 7 years now it is unreliable at best. After being used on a daily basis it frequently takes about 5 minutes to start recording a video. The time continually increases until you have no choice but to wipe out everything SnagIt related including the plist files , and then reinstalling, only to run into the same vicious cycle a month down the road.

Support is literally non-existent unless you pay for a maintenance agreement. If you upgrade your operating system you run the risk of not being able to run an older version of SnagIt, but you have to purchase a new version if you want to update the one that you have if it’s running into issues.

This is poor business practice, and at the very least patches should be released to allow the older version to function on newer operating systems as we did pay for the sofware. Easy to install and use. It’s one of the only products I’ve found over 8 years that have allowed me to capture a scrolling screen. It has been extremely quick and easy to use in design and development work. This includes recording screens, and minor “to be” editing for development work and user analysis. It has been my go to software in work, and quite often in private requirements too for 8 years plus.

This software is intuitive to install and use. You can get up and running in no time! The capturing commands and wording is easy to follow and user friendly, even if you’ve never used something like this before.

The scrolling window is still the prime usable feature in this software. Also, minor editing is clean, simple, and effective. Highlighting steps or features on screens is simple and efficient. The industry has changed, there are a number of free captures products built in to windows etc.

The scrolling window and recording has been a life-saver for me in my SAP manual and instructional work. However, I am considering looking around to see if I can tighten the belt and find alternatives. A small fee subscription model may be easier to sustain. Subscribe when I have jobs to pay for it, and take a pause when I don’t need it. Thanks for your feedback. So I have found a temporary workaround – if all you are wanting to do is convert the captured image into a proper format. I only used the wizard to convert a snag to a png, it looks like you can add filters and what not from there, but I did not experiment with it. I also found that the SnagIt 12 editor works properly, but you need to point it to the above directory to see your captures. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community.

If you do not select the recommended location, Snagit creates a new library. To combine the existing library and the new library at a later time, see Merge Libraries.

When you change the Library location, Snagit moves all the existing files in the library to the new location. During this process Snagit is temporarily unavailable. After Snagit moves the files, it may take a moment to display all files in the Library. Snagit closes all captures in the Recent Captures Tray. To merge libraries, change the location of the current library to the Snagit folder that holds the library you want to merge it with. Snagit merges the libraries in the location you selected.

Do you just buy Snagit because the internet has been force-feeding it to you for years? Or do you roll up your sleeves and decide to look for a free alternative to Snagit? Why you have to pay for a tool so simple as screen capture is beyond our understanding, but Snagit only comes in a premium package.

It is both screenshot capture tool and screen recording software. Powered by StreamingVideoProvider , Screenrec uses a sophisticated algorithm to upload your recording to the cloud in real time. So, as soon as you finish recording, you instantly get a shareable link. The interface is mind-blowingly simple. Capturing screencasts or screenshots is as easy as opening the app, selecting your capture area, and pressing a button. It comes with a very simple but yet powerful screenshot annotation tool and lets you add comments, draw rectangles and arrows or add text.

You have the option of recording audio from a mic or your system, or both. Yes, both! That, plus the ability to record unlimited videos for free, makes Screenrec the best free alternative to Snagit. It provides 4 different modes to capture any screen activity easily, including the video recorder, audio recorder, webcam recorder, and screen capture function.

You can flexibly record any type of content revealed on the desktop screens. Besides the basic screen recording functions, some advanced functions are offered.

For example, its real-time editing panel makes it convenient to draw and add notes while recording. Before saving a recording, you can also trim or cut some unnecessary parts or adjust the sound volume to create a satisfying screen recording. When the recording task is completed, you will also have a shortcut to upload and share the recorded content to popular social media platforms.

And the greatest part is that the video recording doesn’t even come with a watermark! The Windows snipping tool is a PC screenshot tool that is included in Windows Vista and later by default. Greenshot is a free and open source screen-capture tool that can serve as a Snagit free alternative for Windows 7.

Greenshot is a fairly simple program that gives you all you need when capturing screenshots. It is very lightweight and refrains from making you climb a steep learning curve. We are lazy. Give us something that we can understand in five minutes. Lightshot, available in Google Chrome Web Store , is a browser extension app that not only allows you to easily take a screenshot, but allows you to upload it to the server and creates a short link, similar to Screenrec.

With Lightshot, you can also search for images similar to the one you captured. Either way, Lightshot is still a free Snagit alternative worth downloading for Chrome users.

Jing is an interesting alternative to Snagit in that they were both created and released by TechSmith. Whether I’m developing an online tutorial or needing to send a quick screenshot, I’ve come to rely on SnagIt for many years.

It’s very easy to use and don’t think twice when I need to do a quick screenshot when I’m having a problem with an app or website. It has become a lifesaver for that. Since I go back and forth from a Mac to a PC it is nice that the program is available on both platforms. Also, over the years the features on both platforms have gotten more similar in their usage. The only con I would say is if you want to do something other than a simple screenshot you might be overwhelmed by its numerous features with the editor.

I think its a tool you can use without needing much involvement or support from the snagit team. They host monthly customer webinars you can attend if you need more support with the product but I think it’s very easy to use, I taught myself how to use it. I use this tool to capture screenshots and software recordings and am able to edit, annotate, and upload images directly into various support center softwares I have used.

I like the annotation features to truly showcase what you are trying to show on the screenshot. I like that you can take the entire length of the screen in your screenshot, sometimes the graphic designers on my team need this format to be able to format the screengrab to their content needs. It can be buggy — sometimes when I open the app on my desktop it will not open and I have to use another tool. That can be frustrating when you need to take a screencapture right then.

I am an instructional designing and learning facilitator. I use SnagIt for all of my screen captures. I can now also use SnagIt to grab text that I might otherwise have to type out my hand. This saves me a ton of time. It does what it says it will do efficiently. I use it all day long. And even though I have been using it since version 1, I discover new options quite frequently. I have my own keyboard shortcuts set up for the type of screenshot I want to take.

I can modify images crop, add text, add stamps, delete something that shouldn’t be there, add arrows and numbers, etc. But this happens less now than it used to when the product first came out. All print screen does is capture everything on the current screen, while SnagIt gives you lots of options about what to capture. Industry: Computer Software.
