Despite its functionality, users with access to Adobe’s Creative Cloud will find Photoshop and XD to offer much more flexibility, on the other hand, users who are looking for a free solution can benefit from Canva and its toolset.
Publisher offers a wide range of features that allow users to create a detailed or straightforward document. Each project starts with a blank canvas where you can upload images, add shapes and designs , or experiment with their pre-built templates to find something that fits the design you need.
Features like image overlapping allow you to drag an image over the top of another and immediately replace it. Icons and highlights give you a clear indication of when this is happening to avoid unwanted replacements. Changing backgrounds is made simple with the application to background feature that allows you to select an image and then apply it to the background.
This automatically fills the background with the selected image. Publisher truly shines with its catalog of templates at your disposal. Even the most novice user can craft something professional by editing over the top of one of these templates. It also provides the tools and color pallets to customize these templates to fit your brand, giving you a shortcut to professional-looking documents that will wow at your next meeting.
Microsoft has always ensured that each new piece of software is on brand, and Publisher is no different. While Publisher doesn’t look as clean or well designed as other apps, it does retain a similar feel to that of Word or Powerpoint.
Fortunately for users, the interface is easy to use , and it won’t take long to get to grips with the various tabs and functionality on offer. If you use other Microsoft apps , it’ll take even less time to understand where everything is and to use Publisher at its full potential. The top bar hosts most functionality options , including different color pallets, while drag and drop boxes make creating new documents a breeze.
You can also add your own by going to the Insert tab and clicking on the Draw Text Box command, which lets you click and drag to create your own text object where you want it. Most of the templates in Publisher will offer up pre-made boxes and objects, so getting familiar with these is necessary. These boxes usually contain dummy text which you can easily double click and edit, customizing the font, size, and color. In addition, you have a number of options to format your picture in your publication.
Just head over to the Format tab when your picture is selected and you can start tailoring your images. Building blocks make it easier for you to build and customize your publication by giving you pre-made elements. You can find these under the Insert tab on the ribbon:. By exploring a few customizations, you can easily select an element you want and then click and drag to reposition and resize the element accordingly.
Since MS Publisher is a desktop publishing software program, it’s just as important to learn more about layout and design as well as to learn about Publisher.
That said, before we delve into the technical aspects of Publisher itself and teach you how to use it, let’s learn some basic principles of good design. You’ll find that this information will help you use Publisher to create more professional and beautiful publications and designs. Alignment refers to the placement of text and graphics so that they line up on a page. It helps to create attractive pages.
You can use alignment to group items, create order, or organize the page elements. Alignment can be horizontal, vertical, or you can line up text and objects along their top, bottom, left, or right edges.
Balance is achieved by making sure elements are evenly distributed on a page. You don’t want to have one section with dozens of pictures, the next with none — or everything lined up on side of the page and nothing on the other. White Space. White space is the space in your layout and design that has nothing in it.
It’s just blank space — or white space. It’s important to have enough white space so the page is easy to look at and to read. You don’t want to cram in pictures and text. It looks like a traffic jam for the eyes. When you place objects close together on a page, you group them together and suggest a relationship. If you place objects far apart, it suggests lack of a relationship. This is important to remember in design. Group objects that are related close together.
For example, you can group pictures and text together. Put the picture near related text, not in some other section where it’s out of place. If you put all square shapes in your design, not one part of your design would stand out, would it? Use big and small elements, different shapes, and even different colors of text to achieve contrast. It makes for a more attractive design. All the different objects and pieces in your design should tie together and become a whole.
Consistency and Repetition. Repeating use of design styles, font types, and design elements helps someone to easier navigate your design and find what they need. This is especially important if you are designing monthly newsletters or brochures.
These are all things that you must keep in mind whenever you design a layout in Publisher or any other desktop publishing software. The great thing about Publisher is that you can use templates to make your work quicker and easier. However, if you need or want to design your own pieces, these terms are what you need to apply to your work to create stunning presentations.
